My sister, Margaret and I have been busy with a new hobby.  Margaret decided to get healthy and start running.  She has run a few 5Ks, 10Ks, and a couple half marathons.  She has convinced me to start running with her.  What really convinced me was two things.
  1. We are running to raise money for the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation.
  2. We will be running in Napa Valley (can anyone say wine at the end of the trail)
I had a friend who died a few days before Christmas who suffered from Crohn's disease most of her life.  Then we discovered that another friend of ours has a son with Crohn's.  He is 12 years old and just found out that he has the disease last July.  He has had some issues dealing with all the complications.

For those who do not know what Crohn's is, it is a type of inflammatory bowel disease that may affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract from mouth to anus, causing a wide variety of symptoms. It primarily causes abdominal pain, diarrhea (which may be bloody if inflammation is at its worst), vomiting (can be continuous), or weight loss, but may also cause complications outside the gastrointestinal tract such as skin rashes, arthritis, inflammation of the eye, tiredness, and lack of concentration. Crohn's disease is caused by interactions between environmental, immunological and bacterial factors in genetically susceptible individuals. This results in a chronic inflammatory disorder, in which the body's immune system attacks the gastrointestinal tract possibly directed at microbial antigens. Crohn's disease has traditionally been described as an autoimmune disease, but recent investigators have described it as a disease of immune deficiency.

So since Margaret is a major competitor, we have decided to make a competition out of raising money.   We each have a website that you can donate to (Margaret convinced her husband to run as well).  All money goes directly to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation.
